Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find some frequently asked questions about our residency program and the application process.

What is the size of the program?

At full complement, the program will include 45 total residents: 15 at PGY1 level, 15 at PGY2 level, and 15 at PGY3 level.

We are pleased to announce that we anticipate offering 15 Categorical positions for the Methodist Internal Medicine residency program.

Does the program accept international applicants?

We consider all applicants to our program and offer invitations based on performance and best fit for our program.

Are there minimum USMLE/COMLEX scores required to apply?

No, while board scores do play a part in assessing whether an applicant warrants an invite to interview,  we do not have a score cutoff for applicants, and we review all applications with a holistic review process. 

How does the program use signals?

Yes, we consider applicants who have signaled us via ERAS.

Does the program offer observership and/or rotations for medical students?

Yes, selected students will rotate under the mentorship of a highly respected faculty comprised of subspecialty-trained clinicians, committed and experienced physician-educators, and successful physician-scientists. 

What documents are required to apply?

The required documents for an applications are at least three (3) letters of recommendation, the Dean's letter/MSPE, formal transcripts, USMLE/COMLEX transcripts, and a personal statement.

How can I apply to the program?

Our program only accepts electronic applications through the AAMC Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis.

How will interviews be conducted?

All interviews will be conducted virtually.

Do you interview applicants without ties to Texas and/or San Antonio?

We aim to attract and match applicants who exemplify outstanding academic and technical achievement, while also embodying kind and compassionate human qualities. In recent cycles, we have been thrilled to match applicants from medical schools across California, Florida, New York, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Wisconsin, Utah, and many more.

What housing is available in the city of San Antonio?

San Antonio, the second-largest city in Texas by population, is experiencing rapid growth, with new housing options consistently emerging in the neighborhoods surrounding the hospital and beyond. In 2025, the cost of living in San Antonio is 25.2% less expensive than the national average.

If I am chosen to interview for a residency position, who will I interview with?

You will participate in an interview with the Program Director, Associate Program Director, and additional faculty members who are closely involved with the residency program.

Do resident have to travel to many different hospitals for rotations?

The Methodist Hospital is the main hospital where you will complete the majority of your residency training. During the course of your residency training, you may be required to travel to the Methodist Metropolitan, which is located in downtown San Antonio. Free covered parking is provided in all training sites. For other rotations that require travel, the ride will be provided.
