Critical Care Services

The intensive care units at Methodist Main Hospital (MH) offer residents the opportunity to learn under the direction of CCM faculty, as well as faculty members from other specialties, including cardiothoracic surgery, nephrology, cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery, general surgery, and the advanced heart failure team.

Residents rotate through 7S MICU, 7S LR, and CVICU, in addition to Metropolitan MICU. Each resident will complete six or more ICU rotations during the course of their residency. Residents will take care of a large number of patients after transplantation (eg, heart, lung, liver, kidney) and manage patients on extracorporeal life support (eg, ECMO, VAD). Residents will have ample opportunities to learn and perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with special attention paid to airways, central lines, and POCUS. The breadth of complex cases, combined with our diverse patient population and high acuity, makes our critical care experience one of the most challenging yet rewarding parts of our residency.

Inpatient Services

Our unique model allows for dedicated exposure to multiple subspecialties. The inpatient services at Methodist Hospital allow for a wide exposure to care for hospitalized patients, and a broad spectrum of pathology is encountered. Selected senior staff are assigned to each pod, which comprises one senior resident and two interns.

Residents are responsible for most patient care at Methodist Hospital. Senior staff are responsible for overall supervision of patient care and teaching during rotation, and teaching rounds are conducted daily.

Additional staff to help care for your patient's needs include on-site pharmacists, therapists, a wound care team, a PICC team, case managers, on-site clerks, and dietitians who also participate in multidisciplinary rounds for general medicine.

Cardiology Services

Methodist Cardiology Clinic of San Antonio is the largest cardiology practice in the San Antonio area, having provided superior, patient-centered services to patients since 1984. Throughout the metropolitan area, residents provide a wide array of care in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases alongside more than 50 expert cardiologists.

Methodist Hospital is a tertiary hospital that accepts complex, elective, and emergency cardiac referrals, including those for patients with advanced heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and lung/heart transplant.

Procedures

Being on the inpatient services at Methodist Hospital, a tertiary care center, means residents will be providing various procedures for some of the sickest patients in South Texas. We gain exposure to a wide variety of patients undergoing procedures, including but not limited to central lines, Swan-Ganz,  arterial lines, thoracentesis, chest tubes,  paracentesis, intubations, lumbar punctures,  POCUS, and bronchoscopy.

Rotation Sites

Our Department provides education for its residents at five full-service hospitals and a continuity clinic, all located in the city of San Antonio. The Methodist Main Hospital is the largest medical complex of its kind in South Texas, serving as the tertiary referral center for Bexar County and much of the Surrounding Region. The diversity of pathology provides residents with an unparalleled, supervised clinical experience, allowing for progressive responsibility as they manage challenging patient cases to prepare them for independent practice and/or further specialized training.
