Critical Care Services
Residents completing ICU training at Methodist Hospital gain extensive critical care experience guided by a multidisciplinary teaching team. Trainees work directly with Critical Care Medicine faculty alongside attending specialists in cardiothoracic surgery, nephrology, cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery, general surgery, and advanced heart failure.
Residents complete six or more dedicated critical care blocks over the course of the residency, rotating across several high-volume units:

Training Sites: 7 South MICU, 7 South Step-down/Progressive Care (LR), CVICU, and the Metropolitan Hospital MICU.

High-Acuity Management: Clinical responsibility for post-transplant patients (heart, lung, liver, and kidney) and individuals requiring mechanical circulatory or respiratory support, including ECMO and ventricular assist devices (VADs).

Procedure Mastery: Hands-on experience performing key diagnostic and therapeutic bedside procedures, emphasizing airway management, central line placement, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).
The high volume, patient diversity, and clinical complexity of South Texas’s primary referral center ensure residents emerge confident and fully equipped to manage the spectrum of critical illness.
Serving Community
Residents serve 74 counties of South Texas. Methodist Healthcare is the largest private funding source for uninsured and underinsured patients in the region.
Methodist Healthcare Ministries operates two primary care clinics in San Antonio – Wesley Health & Wellness Center and Dixon Health & Wellness Center, in addition to one George Ricks School Based Health Center in Guadalupe County, addressing medical, dental, and behavioral health needs for the community.
Inpatient Services
We aim to provide a robust inpatient experience utilizing the impressive access to resources, sub-specialties, and multi-disciplinary teams at Methodist Hospital. The inpatient services at Methodist Hospital allow residents to experience caring for medically complex, high acuity patients who require advanced intervention and continuous care. Serving as a vital referral hub for South Texas, we deliver multidisciplinary clinical care across specialized inpatient units.
Residents are trained to increase their clinical acumen and skillset while performing patient care, gaining progressive autonomy in the process. Residents are supervised by Senior staff who provide the supervision needed during the delivery of patient care as well as conducting teaching rounds daily during the rotation.
Methodist Hospital is home to an impressive multi-disciplinary team that assists in the care for patient needs which include on-site pharmacists, physical/occupational therapy, PICC team, wound care team, case managers, dieticians, and nursing staff that all contribute to multi-disciplinary rounds.
Cardiology Services
Methodist Cardiology Clinic of San Antonio is the largest cardiology practice in the San Antonio area, having provided superior, patient-centered services to patients since 1984. Throughout the metropolitan area, residents provide a wide array of care in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases alongside more than 50 expert cardiologists.
Methodist Hospital is a tertiary hospital that accepts complex, elective, and emergency cardiac referrals, including those for patients with advanced heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and lung/heart transplant.
Procedures
Being on the inpatient services at Methodist Hospital, a tertiary care center, means residents will be providing various procedures for some of the sickest patients in South Texas. We gain exposure to a wide variety of patients undergoing procedures, including but not limited to central lines, Swan-Ganz, arterial lines, thoracentesis, chest tubes, paracentesis, intubations, lumbar punctures, POCUS, and bronchoscopy.
Rotation Sites
Trainees in our program gain clinical experience across five full-service hospital campuses and an outpatient continuity clinic throughout San Antonio. As our flagship site and South Texas's leading tertiary referral hub, Methodist Hospital exposes residents to high-acuity cases and diverse pathology from across Bexar County and the broader region.

Through structured attending supervision, residents assume progressive autonomy while managing complex cases, developing the skills and clinical judgment needed for confident independent practice or competitive fellowship placement.
